Matching Wedding Bands: Pairing Engagement and Wedding Rings
Wedding bands are arguably the most important jewelry pieces of all. They’re not mere fashion statements, but rather represent commitment and love. There are countless styles, from the well-loved, traditional yellow gold bands, to more contemporary designs that may feature different metals and even gemstones.

Today, more and more couples are choosing to invest in wedding bands that match, adding that extra bit of cohesion and togetherness into something already brimming with those qualities.
More interestingly, however, are the wedding sets that have designed both the engagement and wedding rings to come together in perfect unison. Rather than finding engagement rings and wedding rings separately, these sets have been specifically created to bring a visual harmony to the two.
What Are Matching Wedding Sets?
Matching wedding sets are made so that the engagement ring is designed in harmony with the wedding band. This may mean that the shape is crafted so that they fit together, or they contain the same number or type of gemstone, or feature the same design facets—or some mixture of these. As is traditional, the engagement ring will usually contain a center diamond, while the wedding band will either be plain or adorned with accent diamonds. Take, for example, this

As you can see, the wedding band features the same single strand of diamonds that travel up the shoulder of the ring itself, while it has been crafted to fit alongside the more complex engagement ring, which features a twisted shank design leading to the center diamond. It’s a completely gorgeous pairing, two rings that, in their design, become one.

A bold design made from 18k white gold, the diamonds embedded on both bands sparkle superbly. The central diamond sits within an ornate four-prong gallery that provides the engagement ring with an incredibly regal feel.
Matching Separate Wedding and Engagement Rings
If you’re looking to match individual engagement rings and wedding bands that haven’t been designed as a pair, that’s easily done, provided you’ve read up on our best practices.
Choose Matching Metals
Today, rings are traditionally made from:
- Yellow gold
- White gold
- Rose gold
- Platinum
- Palladium
- Sterling Silver
They can also be made from alternative metals, such as tungsten carbide, stainless steel, and titanium, amongst others. Many engagement and wedding ring combinations can actually contain different gemstones or designs, but to create an ultimately matching pair, the metals chosen should be the same.
Take these two rings. Both are crafted by different designers, and yet, with matching metals (in this case, platinum), we can see how well they pair together.

Pair Designs
Many rings will have similar or matching design features, or features that, while dissimilar, actually pair together well. Consider whether your two chosen rings have a similar finish, or geometric or classical patterns that match.
Matching designs or finishes can actually let you pair rings of different colors in ways that will pair, as if they were made for each other.
Take these two rings by Verragio as an example. While the designer is the same, they’ve not been made for each other. However, similarities in design, such as the use of a Round Brilliant diamond melee that travels up the band, allow the two to be paired. The use of rose gold accents in the engagement ring makes this pairing even more effective. Mixing different metals is certainly not the norm, but many couples today do not feel bound by convention!

Match Your Gemstones
Matching gemstones will bring harmony to your two choices, especially if you can choose rings that utilize the same cut of gemstone, such as rings that both use the same carat weight
Round Brilliant diamonds, or the same carat weight
princess cut diamonds.
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, or other colored stones—these all look fantastic when embedded in high-quality jewelry. In many cases, diamonds will be mixed with other gemstones, such as rubies or sapphires, to give a piece of jewelry a more dynamic look.

There is now a wide range of wedding and engagement ring sets that are designed to purposefully fit together, contoured and designed in matching or complementary ways. Paired together, they look stunning, and carry more impact than the sum of the two combined.
To find engagement rings and matching wedding bands, we recommend searching for them either at the same time, or as a designed set. This ensures that designs and features can pair perfectly and avoid the possibility of mismatched rings.
